Freedom 1000 Automated
Alignment System
Burleigh's Freedom ™ 1000 automated alignment system offers the industry's only truly automated five-axis alignment system, with 20-nanometer linear and arc-sec rotational resolution all revolving around a true virtual point in space. This new product enables a new generation of automated nanopositioning systems for the most demanding applications in photonics packaging, test and measurement. Applications include:
Single mode fiber alignment
Array alignment
Fiber testing
Component assembly
Waveguide assembly
Fiber-to-device assembly
For more than 27 years Burleigh has manufactured INCHWORM® positioning systems for applications that require the ability to provide ultra-fine nanometer resolution over tens of millimeters of travel.
Why Freedom?
The Freedom 1000 system offers state-of-the-art technology to meet the demanding
needs of the photonics community. Burleigh offers the freedom to do the
following:
Automated alignment with five degrees of freedom
Freedom of long travel with nanometer resolution
Freedom of open architecture for your software needs
Freedom to choose how your system is designed
Freedom to meet your customization needs with modularity
Freedom to do more with your manufacturing process
Freedom to use less manufacturing workspace
Freedom to automate faster with your existing staff and resources
The VIRTUAL POINT is one of the keys to the design of the Freedom 1000 system. Burleigh offers the capability to have all five degrees of freedom revolve around a single fixed point in space. This means that when a new axis is aligned (for example, tip or tilt), previously aligned axes such as X, Y or Z are not disturbed. The virtual point provides highly productive automated alignment, because it avoids the translational errors and realignment inherent in most other alignment systems. Components and assemblies can be easily mounted to the face of the Freedom 1000 with your custom fixturing.
The Freedom 1000 system incorporates the latest technology to achieve the maximum precision and control in the alignment process. Burleigh's patented piezoelectric INCHWORM® design allows for step sizes of 4 nm over a range of 25 mm, while the high resolution glass scale encoders provide closed loop control at 20 nm.
High precision bi-directional repeatability makes the Freedom 1000 system unique in the industry. Our patented technology includes closed loop encoders, which allow for bi-directional repeatability of ± 20nm linearly and ± 2.15 arc-sec rotationally. This capability provides the distinct advantage of being able to locate a point, move from that point to perform another operation and return to the original location with complete confidence that no significant loss of alignment has occurred.
The Freedom 1000 system offers users five degrees of freedom using crossed roller bearing stage technology to provide a single virtual point without geometric transformation and the need for costly and extensive motion control technology. All of this automation is provided with sub-micron accuracy.
Modularity is another important Freedom 1000 system feature. If the full five degrees of freedom are not required, the system can be easily configured to provide whatever subset is desired. Two, three or four axis systems can be provided and easily integrated into the manufacturing environment. Maintenance and calibration is fast and easy, maximizing up-time in production and automation.
The compact size of the Burleigh Freedom 1000 system makes it one of the smallest and most stable automated systems in the world, maximizing the workspace on your production floors and in your R&D labs.
Full automation and repeatability is why the Freedom 1000 system is uniquely able to meet all of your demanding, high resolution positioning needs. Using the standard communications software via a PC interface, you can easily program through GUI interfaces in LabView, Visual Basic or C++. In addition the system can be easily operated manually using dual 6003 joystick or 6005 handset controls to manipulate all five degrees of freedom.
Customer support is a core value at Burleigh. Our technology experts are available to assist with the initial installation and training of your Freedom series multi-axis system to assure that you maximize the potential of your Burleigh system using the capabilities of our expansive software "toolbox."
