Data Matrix is a 2-D matrix code, that contains dark and light square areas.
It has a reference pattern of two continuous lines and two alternation dark and light "dots" on the perimeter of the code.
Typically CCD based camera devices ("data matrix readers") are used to scan the codes.
Data Matrix is used for reduced dimensions items, and allows the storage of a large ammount of information, by a large variety of printing and marking technology.
It is worth to note that the Data matrix codes have a certain degree of redundancy, being then less prone to errors, in case some part of the code is lost. This characteristic is key for critical applications, like in drug industry.
